Andreas Scheba
Research Specialist
Andreas Scheba is a Research Specialist in the Economic Performance and Development unit of the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa. He works closely with Professor Ivan Turok in the SHLC project, specifically on the Cape Town component of the study.
Andreas has a Masters degree in Socio-economics from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria and a Ph.D. in Development Policy and Management from the University of Manchester, U.K. During and between his studies he spent long periods in Kenya (Nairobi), Tanzania (Lindi region) and South Africa (Cape Town).
Andreas’ research interests are poverty, inequality and sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is particularly interested in urban governance and policy with regard to affordable housing, informality and spatial economy. His research is informed by theories of political economy, development studies and geography and aims to contribute to scientific knowledge, public debate and policies on inclusive urbanisation in South Africa. Over the past three years, he has worked on urban projects for the National Treasury, Parliament of South Africa, ESRC/NRF Urban Transformations, international donors, the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town.
Andreas is originally from Austria. He lives in Cape Town with his South African wife and two children.
