Keith Kintrea

Keith Kintrea is Deputy Director of SHLC and Professor of Urban Studies and Housing in the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow. Keith is responsible for Centre governance, research integrity and research ethics, and for liaison with Nankai University, SHLC’s China partner. He also chairs the SHLC’s UK Management Team and, among the Glasgow-based Co-Is, is the theme leader for neighbourhoods.
Keith’s research centres on disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods and the impacts they have on their residents’ lives. He is interested in the wider role of housing and housing processes and the extent to which housing accentuates or mitigates inequalities. A lot of his recent work has focussed on young people in disadvantaged areas, including research on territorial behaviour, educational aspirations and educational attainment. Keith has held research funding from ESRC, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Scottish Government and the Irish Government, amongst other bodies.
He has held a number of roles at University of Glasgow, including past Head of Urban Studies. He teaches housing policy and urban policy at undergraduate and Masters level and supervises a group of PhD students. He is a former secretary of the UK Housing Studies Association and chairs the Management Board of the International Journal of Housing Policy. For a long time Keith has been active in the voluntary housing sector, including a spell on the board of Glasgow Housing Association, and he has chaired 2 other associations at different times and remains of the board of a fourth.
